He often gives us an update as to what's around.</p><p style="text-align: left;">A little earlier this month a male bullfinch was spotted along the canal path. No particularly rare birds have been spotted. Another of our volunteers has provided a bird feeder, which is proving very popular. It is attracting lots of finches, mainly house sparrows with the occasional chaffinch. Feeding house sparrows is important as their estimated population has dropped by 60-70% since the mid 1970s.</p><p style="text-align: left;">Just a stones throw away is Fishlake Meadows where many birds are seen. Earlier this month a bittern was seen booming over the meadow on several days.</p><p style="text-align: left;">We do have a very tame robin on the signal box site. It has been known for him to come right into the cafe to scrounge some crumbs whilst we are eating lunch. He often sits on one of the fences watching our activities.</p>Romsey Signal Boxhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02996651068943586035noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8560863551656641658.post-14717325457682047922024-02-05T10:58:00.000+00:002024-02-05T10:58:15.138+00:00<p style="text-align: center;"><b><u><span style="color: #274e13; font-size: x-large;">JUST A QUICKIE!</span> </u></b></p><p style="text-align: left;">If anyone has any news items or anything people may be interested in then please do send it in to me at datrewern@gmail.com. It is very much appreciated.</span></p><p style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;">We hope everyone enjoys the signal box site during 2024.</span></p><p style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Very best wishes.</span></p><p style="text-align: left;"><span><br /></span></p><p style="text-align: left;"><span><br /></span></p>Romsey Signal Boxhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02996651068943586035noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8560863551656641658.post-17302257408106288692023-12-17T06:05:00.000+00:002023-12-17T06:05:44.233+00:00<p style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: red; font-size: x-large;"><b>MERRY CHRISTMAS</b></span> </p><p style="text-align: center;">I would personally like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a happy and carefree 2024.</p><p style="text-align: center;">Thanks go to everyone who supports the Romsey Signal Box Working Museum, whether a member, a visitor or any other type of supporter. Work on restoring the signal box is due to begin in the early part of 2024 and the discovery centre is looking really good and is rapidly becoming a fantastic educational tool. We had two sunny days with a diverse range of visitors. On the open day, we had 36 visitors of all ages, and the next day, a small group of retired people.</span></p><div dir="ltr" style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: OpenSans-webfont; font-size: 16px;">Our track circuit display and model railway were a big hit. Some visitors watched our 'Mini History of Railway Signalling' video, while others used interactive computer displays.</div><div dir="ltr" style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: OpenSans-webfont; font-size: 16px;"><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /></div><div dir="ltr" style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: OpenSans-webfont; font-size: 16px;">The informal opening provided valuable feedback for improvement. Various surveys etc. are happening and so hopefully the start of work is to be sooner rather than later.</li><li>The cafe is still proving to be popular. I have tried various menu items over time with some encouraging results. The open day yesterday (5th February) proved to be well worthwhile with over 40 visitors, some just for The Buffer Stop cafe. I had toasted sandwiches on the menu and sold out. The Test Valley mayor and his wife visited the site and they came into the cafe for refreshments, which included a piece of my coffee and walnut cake</li></ul>More updates soon.<p></p><p style="text-align: left;">Dave</p>Romsey Signal Boxhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02996651068943586035noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8560863551656641658.post-51670595810155418862022-12-18T07:53:00.000+00:002022-12-18T07:53:44.046+00:00<p style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: red; font-size: large;"><b><u>MERRY CHRISTMAS TO EVERYONE</u></b></span> </p><p style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: medium;">I would personally like to wish everyone a very merry Christmas and a great new year. A big thank you to all who support it, both public and volunteers. I've even been known to <u>buy</u> some beans on toast for my own lunch!</span></li><li><span style="font-size: medium;">The bacon rolls were a success and so a small "George Foreman" grill has been purchased for the cafe kitchen.</span></li><li><span style="font-size: medium;">I do occasionally bake a gluten free sponge. I have to be honest and say that they rarely sell well, which is a shame because they are very good, even if I do say so myself. These sponges cost a little more to produce and are therefor not financially viable. I will still bake one from time to time. I also need to look into what other gluten free things I can offer that have a reasonable shelf life.</span></li><li><span style="font-size: medium;">I mentioned before that the prices will have to be reviewed. I hope to study this before the January open day and produce the new price lists. This is not an easy task because obviously we need to make a profit, but conversely we want to give all our customers good value for money.</span></li></ul><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: medium;">I hope everyone has a great festive period and new year.</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: medium;">See you in 2023.</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Dave</span></div><p></p>Romsey Signal Boxhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11053214949145847747noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8560863551656641658.post-75964738309244484822022-11-03T17:02:00.000+00:002022-11-03T17:02:39.937+00:00<p style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: #38761d; font-size: large;"><u>REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY</u> </span></p><p style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: #38761d; font-size: large;"><br /></span></p><p style="text-align: center;"></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPCR1GPs6_SOujf83r6STKQiVauqQUkyB2OVKCzs0CdGMeW42W2MfZ_ebWfvgvMEUQ790MoPCOZzgy3E9S5oxHqGdhhH2iLojsSuNdHZSv8yGoLVuJ98Maddg2-YSXKcuLmvBmMD-IoEgz-lqTzlcJCJaXYQ_NvWsAlgs3_o7V-rQi7kL3MrSFRCMyYw/s922/IMG_20221102_121911%20Poppies%20knitted%20by%20Kelly%20RSB.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="922" data-original-width="463" height="779" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPCR1GPs6_SOujf83r6STKQiVauqQUkyB2OVKCzs0CdGMeW42W2MfZ_ebWfvgvMEUQ790MoPCOZzgy3E9S5oxHqGdhhH2iLojsSuNdHZSv8yGoLVuJ98Maddg2-YSXKcuLmvBmMD-IoEgz-lqTzlcJCJaXYQ_NvWsAlgs3_o7V-rQi7kL3MrSFRCMyYw/w393-h779/IMG_20221102_121911%20Poppies%20knitted%20by%20Kelly%20RSB.jpg" width="393" /></a></div><br /><div style="text-align: center;">This wonderful poppy display was created by Kelly.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">Our very clever neighbour Kelly has knitted these poppies and created the stunning display on the side of the signal box. For those non-technical amongst us, each LED requires its own resistor to limit the amount of current it draws when lit.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: large;">More news as and when available.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: large;">Dave</span></div></div><p></p>Romsey Signal Boxhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11053214949145847747noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8560863551656641658.post-69701854019783837912022-10-17T11:27:00.001+01:002022-10-17T11:27:06.441+01:00<p style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: #38761d; font-size: large;"><b>SIMULATOR PANEL UPGRADE...</b></span></p><p style="text-align: center;"><br /></p><p style="text-align: center;"></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEise4w2ruFPT8aLtFkeU2dK65JLl__THqqikuW8RGyg-GFhPV9HwjHqNPP1BI8cBQs6JNkRdrVpGuhVTMIl2l1aNLyflX5zL8aYLrYlRsfESKHukMFOwY3Apub5F9owYN6YIHSH9aAeLTFENTzuoXXyJHL05-inW1fVTpoQ1bZjZ97GmJ3J_LXbKUGtWg/s5664/RSB%20Simulator%20Panel_Oct2022.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4248" data-original-width="5664" height="457" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEise4w2ruFPT8aLtFkeU2dK65JLl__THqqikuW8RGyg-GFhPV9HwjHqNPP1BI8cBQs6JNkRdrVpGuhVTMIl2l1aNLyflX5zL8aYLrYlRsfESKHukMFOwY3Apub5F9owYN6YIHSH9aAeLTFENTzuoXXyJHL05-inW1fVTpoQ1bZjZ97GmJ3J_LXbKUGtWg/w609-h457/RSB%20Simulator%20Panel_Oct2022.jpg" width="609" /></a></div><br /><div style="text-align: left;">For those who don't know, this is the simulator panel in the locking room. It's from here that we pretend to be the other signal boxes (Redbridge, Kimbridge and Eastleigh) during a demonstration. The person operating this panel listens to the demonstrator upstairs, and sends the appropriate bells, lights etc, which means a truly realistic demonstration to the visiting public.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">Up until now the lights on the diagram in the signal box have been controlled simply by a toggle switch on the simulator panel. With no other visual indication as to whether the switch is on or off it is easy to forget one. Following some investigation, some new push on/push off switches with an L.E.D indicator have been obtained. These are about to be installed and wired up. This will give a very visual indication that the switch is turned on.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">Dave</div><p></p>Romsey Signal Boxhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11053214949145847747noreply@blogger.com0
